The School of Journalism and Mass Communications offers coursework in gathering, interpreting and communicating information for mass and specialized audiences.
The curriculum is a mixture of media theory and lab courses in three professional areas:
JMC students have the option of completing College of Arts and Sciences curriculum requirements for either the Bachelor of Science degree of the Bachelor of Arts degree. The two degrees are identical except for the math, science, and foreign language requirements.
We require 65 hours inside the College of Arts and Sciences, with 87 hours being required outside the School of Journalism. The Arts and Sciences core curriculum consists of Expository Writing I and II, Public Speaking and 18 hours of General Education courses.
Students need to know theories and techniques of mass communication. But they also need a body of knowledge - Humanities, Social Sciences, Quantitative and Natural Sciences courses - outside their discipline.
That's why we require so much coursework outside the major. We want students to have a broad education.
