2009 JMC Honors Banquet

The 2009 JMC Honors Banquet was Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Manhattan Clarion.

Bill Buchanan is president for Hutchinson-based Harris Enterprises, corporate owner of six daily newspapers and a marketing company.

A Kansas native, Buchanan was born in Bucklin Aug. 31, 1956, but grew up in the north-central town of Washington, where his parents owned and operated the weekly Washington County News.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kansas State University. Upon graduation in 1981, he went to work as a reporter-editor for The Hutchinson News. A few months later, he was accepted into the Harris group’s management training program. He spent time in every newspaper department at several locations.

In late 1984, he was named editor and publisher of the Parsons Sun. In 1990, he moved to the same position at the Olathe Daily News. In 1995, Harris Enterprises turned over management of the Daily News to another company, and Buchanan was named vice president for newspapers for Harris.

In September 1996, Buchanan became editor and publisher of The Hutchinson News, a position he held until July 1997, when he moved to corporate headquarters as vice president. He was named president of Harris Enterprises in June 2006.

Buchanan currently serves on the board of the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce and the Inland Press Association Foundation and is a member of the Kansas Commission on Judicial Qualifications.

In 1994-95, Buchanan served as president of the Kansas Press Association. In Hutchinson, he is a past member of the boards of the Kansas Cosmosphere Foundation, United Way, Reno County Historical Society and Hutchinson Hospital, where he served two years as chair.

He is married to Lynette Lacy. They have two sons, Sean, 18, and Benjamin, 16.
